Dental implants are just one of the procedures Dr Lance West has been performing for years. Dental implants are a life-changing procedure for most people, giving them not only new teeth, but a new lease of life along with it.

What are Dental implants?

Dental implants are basically fake teeth, but they’re not dentures. Dentures can be taken in and out, whereas dental implants are permanent.

Why would I need them?

Dental implants are used to replace a lost tooth by supporting an artificial crown. They can also be used to support a fixed bridge here two or more teeth have been lost.

How do they work?

To make them permanent, they have to be securely attached to your jaw bone. Now, this gets a wee bit graphic here, so beware! What happens during the procedure is this: An “implant” is screwed into your jaw bone, where the root of a tooth used to be. This leave a wee bit sticking out, and then a fake tooth (prosthesis) is screwed onto that. This makes it look like a normal, healthy tooth.

Who can get dental implants?

Most maxillofacial surgeons recommend adults only for dental implants, although small children or teenagers who have missing teeth may undergo this procedure even though their jaw bone is still growing. Everyone has a unique dental situation, and only a consultation with Dr. West will determine whether dental implants are recommended.

What’s the procedure like?

Well that all depends. Dental implants happen over different stages, so there’s no simple answer. Some people can have it done under local anaesthetic right here in the Remuera office, while others need a general anaesthetic and full day procedure at the local hospital. It’s different for everyone, but there is a lot of after-care and Dr West will treat each of his patients to their unique circumstances.
